Once a quiet little fishing village on the Sea of Cortés, San Felipe has been transformed into a wide-open, festive, and sunny retreat for young Southern Californians looking for a good party. About 120 miles south of Mexicali and 150 miles southeast of Ensenada, it is a major attraction for snowbirds, who fill up the trailer parks that line the coast leading to San Felipe with recreational vehicles.San Felipe now has a population of around 25,000, growing first in the fifties with the shrimp fleets and more recently with U.S. retirees’ vacation homes at the El Dorado Ranch development north of town. North Americans with temporary Mexican residency status are thought to make up one quarter of San Felipe’s population, and this number is on the increase. Golf is becoming an attraction, in addition to sport fishing (especially in the spring) and there is an annual shrimp festival and cooking competition in November.
