Taxco, a picturesque silver mining town in the mountains of Guerrero, has a long tradition of foreign industrial involvement, religious influence, and slow-growing tourism. By the mid-1900’s, it was firmly on the map as a major honeymoon stop for JFK and Jackie, as well as many others heading to Acapulco, just 170 miles away.
More than a shopping center for silver and minerals, Taxco harbors deep traditions of penitence during semana santa, and sports a boisterous theater festival (Las Alarconianas) in the late spring. The Cacahuamilpa caves (grutas) are an important natural attraction, while the ornate cathedral of Santa Prisca, churches, chapels, museums, markets and steep, winding streets make it a unique destination appealingly accessible from the capital.
Taxco is walkable and safe, but its steep streets and corners demand practical footwear. Even drivers are advised to abandon their vehicles and walk or take a taxi (invariably a nifty, persistent VW beetle).
